We’re introducing the finer side of ‘KIN Jewellery with our new necklaces featuring lab-grown diamonds and we’re so excited to be taking this route down the Demi-Fine Jewellery space.
Here’s the 411 on what Lab-Grown Diamonds are about, how they’re different from mined diamonds, and why you need to get on the lab-grown trend.
In essence, Lab-Grown Diamonds are created using methods that replicate how diamonds form naturally. They’re nearly identical both chemically and physically to mined diamonds, though the only level of difference is in their growth patterns - Lab-Grown Diamonds tend to have a more uniformed growth pattern while mined diamonds exhibit more natural, irregular growth patterns.
Lab-grown diamonds are also graded using the same criteria as mined diamonds, like the 4 Cs – Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight.
The two main methods of creating lab-grown diamonds are:
Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD): Diamonds form from a carbon-rich gas (like methane) in a vacuum chamber. The gas is turned into plasma using microwaves or lasers, causing carbon atoms to crystallise onto a diamond seed.
High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT): This technique replicates natural diamond formation by blasting carbon with intense heat and pressure. A diamond seed and carbon are placed in a press, creating a diamond as the carbon crystallises around the seed.
Why choose lab-grown diamonds? Here are some great perks:
-
Eco-Friendly: They have a much smaller environmental footprint than mined diamonds, reducing deforestation, erosion and pollution.
-
Ethical: They’re better for those concerned about mining-related issues and labour practices.
-
Affordability: They generally cost less than natural diamonds because they don’t involve traditional mining and transportation costs.
-
Top Quality and Customisation: They often have fewer inclusions and imperfections. Plus, the growing environment can be controlled to achieve specific qualities like size, shape and colour.
-
Availability: Lab-grown diamonds make it easier for more people to access high-quality diamonds.
In short, lab-grown diamonds offer an environmental, ethical, and cost-effective alternative to natural diamonds.
